Meta Tag Generator

Fill in what you have and get the tags for your page head: standard meta tags for search engines, Open Graph for Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack and WhatsApp, and Twitter card tags for X. The title and description are measured against the lengths that display in full in search results, with an explanation of what happens outside them. Every value is escaped, so a title containing a quotation mark cannot break out of its attribute. Everything is generated in your browser; nothing is uploaded and no result is recorded anywhere.

How it works

Fill in what you have and the tags appear below, ready to paste into the <head>of your page. Three sets are produced together because they are read by different things: the standard tags by search engines, Open Graph by Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack and WhatsApp, and the Twitter tags by X.

Every value is escaped on the way into its attribute, so a title containing a quotation mark or an angle bracket cannot break out of the tag it sits in.

Fields you leave empty are omitted entirely rather than emitted as an empty attribute, which would be worse than absent.

Meta tags

Paste these inside the <head> element. Social platforms cache what they fetch, so if you change a preview image you will usually need to ask the platform to re-scrape the page before the new one shows.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there three sets of tags?

Different things read different tags: search engines read the standard meta tags, Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack and WhatsApp read Open Graph, and X reads the Twitter tags. There is overlap but no single set covers everything, so all three are produced together.

What are the ideal title and description lengths?

About 50 to 60 characters for a title and 120 to 160 for a description. Beyond those the tail is cut off in search results; well below them you are leaving space unused. The tool measures both as you type.

Do keywords still matter?

Not for the major search engines, which stopped using the keywords tag many years ago because it was so easily abused. It is included for the few systems that still read it, but it is not worth much effort.

Why does my preview image not update after I change it?

Social platforms cache what they fetch. After changing an image you usually need to ask the platform to re-scrape the page through its own debugging tool before the new one appears.

What does the robots tag do?

It tells search engines whether to index the page. Blocking indexing is right for a staging site or a thank-you page, and wrong for anything you want found — so the tool warns when it is set to block.
