Readability Analyzer
This reading level analyzer scores the writing grade level of any English text against seven standard formulas: Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch-Kincaid Grade, Gunning Fog, SMOG, Coleman-Liau, Automated Readability Index, and Dale-Chall. It also reports word, sentence, and syllable counts, the difficult-word ratio, reading and speaking time estimates, and an overall U.S. school grade level averaged across six of the formulas with a plain-English explanation. Everything is calculated locally in your browser — no text is uploaded.
- Paste any block of English text — an article, blog post, product description, essay, or email.
- Metrics update live as you type. You’ll see word/sentence/syllable counts, reading and speaking time estimates, and six readability formulas.
- The Flesch Reading Ease score sits on a 0-100 scale (higher is easier). Every grade-level index is expressed in U.S. school years — target a 6-8th grade reading level for general audiences.
- Everything is computed in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
What reading level is my writing?
Paste the text in and the analyzer reports one U.S. school grade level for it, averaged across six grade-level formulas, with a plain-English description of who reads it comfortably. A grade level of 8 means a typical 13 to 14 year old would follow it without effort.
What does the Flesch Reading Ease score mean?
It’s a 0-100 score where higher numbers mean easier text — 90 and above is very easy, about a 5th-grade level; 60-70 reads as Plain English, around 8th-9th grade; and below 30 is very difficult, roughly college-graduate level.
How is the overall grade level calculated?
It’s the average of six grade-level formulas — Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog, SMOG, Coleman-Liau, Automated Readability Index, and Dale-Chall — giving a single U.S. school grade estimate instead of relying on just one formula.
How do I use the readability analyzer?
Paste any English text into the tool and it returns the full report for that text — all seven formula scores, word and sentence counts, difficult-word ratio, and the overall grade level.
Does this readability checker work on non-English text?
No — it’s built for English only, since the formulas depend on English syllable-counting and word-difficulty rules that don’t transfer to other languages.
Is my text uploaded to calculate the readability score?
No. The full report — every formula, count, and grade level — is calculated locally in your browser with nothing sent to a server.
